The water market in England was deregulated on 1st April 2017 meaning that non-domestic customers regardless of size, were able to switch their water and sewerage services to an alternative supplier and negotiate competitive contracts for these. Scotland became the first country in the world to deregulate its water market for non-domestic customers back in 2008.
The aim of the deregulation is to increase competition and reduce the price customers pay – in the same way as they can buy gas and electricity. Since deregulation in April 2017, businesses, charities and public sector organisations across England have seen many benefits in being able to choose their water and wastewater retailer.
- Approximately 1.2 million businesses were eligible to switch.
- After 5 months, 50,000 businesses had switched.
- Over 58% were SME’s (Small Medium Entreprises)
- There have been large scale savings for some businesses
There are currently 21 water retailers situated throughout the UK who all have the ability to price nationally. Not all retailers are fully active and care still needs to be taken whilst systems, processes, discount structures and levels of customer service are formally established.
