Meter Operating Costs

Since 1988, the UK energy market has been open to independent meter operators (MOPs) who are responsible for installing and maintaining electricity and gas meters. This competition has provided the opportunity for businesses to reduce costs by setting up MOP agreements outside of their standard energy contracts.

What this means to you:

  • A MOP contract is a legal requirement for all half hourly electricity supplied meters
  • It covers the supply of the meter, ongoing maintenance and necessary telecommunications for sending your consumption data to your energy supplier
  • Your energy supplier will automatically assign a rolling MOP contract to your energy contract using their own or a preferred meter operator
  • The MOP cost is sometimes very difficult to see on bills and can be hidden within the energy rates

In any case, the MOP costs can be a significant amount over the contract term.
